Ubi Sunt (/’oo-bie soo-nt/) is a latin word meaning, “the transitory nature of life.”
Why am I a doula, you ask? My own childbirth experience was less-than empowering. My government-funded, local prenatal classes painted a very scary image of birth and labour and I was constantly being told what to do and how to do it. When I confronted my own doctor about creating a birth plan, she said, “go to the hospital and give birth.” For one of the most important moments of my life, I felt minimized and without adequate knowledge or the voice to articulate my desires. When I heard about doulas and their role in serving parents-to-be, I knew it was a calling. Doulas can play an important role in filling the gap between the parents who feel intimidated and (many) birth professionals who prioritize the “medical procedures” of birth.
